Han Yajuan’s works are typical of the new Chinese painting movement with their clear and occasionally ironic references to pop and ultra-contemporary culture. The new generation of Chinese artists distances itself to some extent from the earlier social responsibility faced by traditional art, preferring a simple and direct style that portrays the light-hearted themes of young people’s collective imaginations with a nod to the cartoons. Han Yajuan was born in Qingdao, Shandong, China, in 1980. She now lives and works in Beijing.
